- First, so the sample will be pure and the test reliable, it is recommended that daily testing be done in the morning upon awakening, prior to eating or drinking anything.
- Open the OVULENS to expose the specimen plate.
- With a clean finger tip, place a small non-foamy drop of saliva from under the tongue on the center of the clean specimen plate.
- Allow the saliva to dry on the open specimen plate while you carry on with your regular morning routine. After ten minutes or more, when the saliva sample is completely dry, tilt the specimen plate back into its original position in the OVULENS.
- Press the button to turn on the test light and bring the eyepiece very close to your eye, almost to where it is brushing your eyelashes, and look through the eyepiece. Gently rotate the focus adjustment as needed.

INFERTILE - A random pattern of spots and dots of random size. More than five days before ovulation and more than two days after ovulation, not fertile.

TRANSITION - Small patterns like the leaves of ferns begin to appear among the spots and dots. Ovulation will probably occur in three to four days. Conception may occur at this time.

FERTILE - Fern leaf patterns are dominant throughout the specimen. Ovulation is imminent or in progress and conception is highly likely. Fertility lasts from three days before to one day after ovulation.
